Updating the Device Software and Firmware

Firmware and Software updates where servers use secondary IP addresses

When DIMENSION4 sensors request a file while flashing their firmware and software, they check the identity of the server that responded to the request by looking at the from address in the response packet. When a request is made on a secondary IP address, the response may sometimes come from the primary IP address, causing this identity check to fail and the packet to be discarded. To support servers that use secondary IP addresses, from version 3.7 SP1 and above, there is a global configuration parameter 'tftp_server_addr_list' (default value "") which can be assigned a comma-separated list of all the server IP addresses. During firmware and software updating, the from address of the response is checked against each of these addresses, and the packet will be retained if it matches any of them.

Updating the Software Version

This step is optional. However, we recommend that you keep the software version up to date in order to avoid overloading the network when rebooting many sensors.

To update the software version, in the LSC:

  1. On the Sensor software/firmware tab, in the upper pane, review the software versions:

    • Intended version: The latest software version to which you should update the device.

    • Flashed version: The current flashed version of the device.

  2. If the Flashed and Intended versions of a device are different, select the device and then, in the upper pane, click Request Update.

During the upgrade process, the status of the sensor briefly changes to Flash Update Pending. After the upgrade is complete, the sensor shows the new software version.

  3. Reboot the sensors as described in Rebooting Devices.

Updating the Firmware Version

To update the firmware version, in the LSC:

  1. On the Sensor software/firmware tab, in the lower pane, review the firmware versions:

    • Intended version: The latest firmware version to which you can update the device.

    • Flashed version: The current firmware version of the device.

  2. If the Flashed and Intended firmware versions of a device are different, select the device and then, in the lower pane, click Request Update.

During the upgrade process, the status of the sensor briefly changes to Flash Update Pending. After the upgrade is complete, the sensor shows the new firmware version.

  3. Reboot the sensors as described in Rebooting Devices.
